The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme (FHRS) is one of the most common signs in restaurant, takeaway and café windows and is one of the best ways a customer can judge the cleanliness and quality of the establishment. This course will give learners the knowledge and skills to obtain a five-star food hygiene rating and explains why it is such an important issue for any food business regardless of industry.
This course contains in-depth knowledge on the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme, how inspectors calculate scores and how to get a 5 star food hygiene rating.

The Food Standards Agency rating scheme is ranked from 5-0:
- 5 – hygiene standards are very good
- 4 – hygiene standards are good
- 3 – hygiene standards are generally satisfactory

This course also comes with a number of resources allowing users to continue their learning after successfully completing this online training course.

Who Should take this course
This course is suitable for anyone working within a food premise including hotels, restaurants, takeaways, cafes, bars, supermarkets, hospitals and care homes.
The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme is enforced in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, meaning only food premises in these areas should take this training.
Test and certification
At the end of the course, learners will be required to answer 15 multiple choice questions to assess their understanding of the course. A 75% pass mark is needed and there’ll be six attempts to achieve this at no extra cost. If more than three are required, you will need to contact the Virtual College team to arrange an additional try.
When the 75% pass mark has been achieved, learners will be able to download and print a Virtual College Achieving a Five Star Rating certificate for their records.
Course duration
This course should take around 30 minutes to complete, but this depends entirely on how quickly each individual learns and absorbs the study material.
As the course is self-paced and progress is recorded throughout, learners can complete the training in stages.

The content of this course has been independently certified as conforming to universally accepted Continuous Professional Development (CPD) guidelines.
